Think Water ~ just for a change

Instead of praising ourselves for the quality of our plastics manufacturing and service support in our blog this month, we want to use this space to share another story of need and excellence. This is the story of the plight of some wonderfully ordinary people in Africa and the efforts that Bruce Bell and Fields of Life are making to help them.

In June 2013 Bruce is undertaking a personal challenge to raise over £3,000 of funds that could potentially save or change the lives of hundreds of African Children. He plans to make the arduous trek up Mount Elgon, the highest volcanic mountain in Africa (4321M / 14,176ft), to raise money for Fields of Life who "help others to help themselves"  by drilling wells & building schools.

Mount Elgon (pictured below) is an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya, north of Kisumu and west of Kitale. The mountain's highest point, named "Wagagai", is located entirely within the country of Uganda. It is really quite a dramatic climb – but then as Bruce clearly knows – it’s really quite a dramatic cause.

We are pleased to have sponsored Bruce who promises to plant a Sinclair & Rush flag at Wagagai – but this is his story today, not ours. All we would like to do is invite you to sponsor him to back his efforts on Mount Elgon and support the worthy cause and ongoing efforts of Fields of Life.

Fields of Life – before and after with Bruce inset top left.

Fields of Life is committed to building sustainable communities in East Africa through teaching the Christian faith and the provision of quality education, water, health promotion and income-generating projects. It has built 98 schools, over 100 wells and 41,000 children are receiving an education.

“For years I have travelled to Uganda and driving through the rural villages I was appalled watching mostly young children and women fetching water.”  Trevor Stevenson, Chairman and Founder.

“It is bad enough that they have to carry water for miles on their heads, but it is what is inside those jerry cans that we, at Fields of Life, cannot accept any longer. The water is infected with a myriad of diseases and women and children are exhausted from carrying heavy loads. The next day they are sick from drinking the dirty contaminated water but if the family is to survive they have to fetch and drink the same dirty water again the next day.”

Clean accessible drinking water is a basic human right, essential to life; yet over one sixth of the world does not have access to safe drinking water. In fact, in some of the communities where Fields of Life works, there are no clean water facilities at all.

Water = Life

STOP PRESS – plastics, print and people

Although our clients ‘Think Plastic’ right across the UK, Europe and further afield to America and South Africa, Sinclair & Rush (UK & Europe) is an established manufacturing business based in the heart of The Garden of England - Kent. The River Medway runs through Maidstone and historically formed an important transport link with Rochester and beyond, via the Thames Estuary to a world of trade.

Trade has always been at the heart of this rich, fertile county – first to cross and last to leave for most land and sea visitors, whether for business or for pleasure.

Perhaps it’s because commerce flows in Kentish blood that organisations such as The Chambers of Commerce; Institute of Directors; The 5:50 Club and other business forums thrive in the county.

Sinclair & Rush, whilst managing a global presence, does not forget its local roots and participates energetically in local and national business groups, exchanging management ideas and introducing opportunities for profitable growth.

Kent is also home to the KM Group – Kent and Medway’s largest commercial media company. Their ‘paid for’ newspapers comprise 10 titles and sell over 100,000 copies a week, reaching 1 in 5 adults in Kent. The flagship Kent Messenger first published as The Maidstone Telegraph in 1859. As well as a number of special business feature editions, a further 250,000 papers print under the ‘Extra’ masthead and are distributed free across the county.

For those who prefer to listen to the sounds of Kent – not larks rising, hay wains creaking and hops a popping on the wire, but music, news, sport, views and competitions – 148,000 good Kentish folk listen to the sound of KMFM, the KM Group’s own radio station.

Being aware of the environment in which we live and work is important for any business, whether you are serving the local community or are simply part of it. Understanding its heritage is important too. After all, this is where we draw the essential skills of our staff from. It is where the service engineers come from who keep our phones, computers and production machinery going – even our coffee machine and water fountains … its all an essential part of the business infrastructure.

So, “if you are serious about being a business in Kent, it pays to be involved” said Peter Boulton, MD, Sinclair & Rush. And if that means stepping up to the mic with the Chairman of the KM Group on an invitation only visit to KMFM then that’s what you do … isn’t it Peter?

at KMFM in February 2013.

Sinclair & Rush is located on the appropriately named Twenty Twenty Industrial Estate just one mile off junction 5 of the M20. With perfect vision, the Estate’s road infrastructure is designed to accommodate even the largest articulated transport vehicles.

From S&R’s access-friendly loading bays, plastic caps, sleeves, plugs and grips are efficiently shipped out to ports, rail heads and clients across the UK and beyond. The products are designed to protect industrial components from contamination in their manufacture and finishing processes as well as from damage in transit.

Today, Kent – tomorrow, the world.

Think Plastic ~ we do … even here, in The Garden of England.

Setting foot on Pluto ~ just ask.

Setting foot on Pluto was a giant leap for Sinclair & Rush, pushing the boundaries of our
Think Plastic ~ we do’
promise.

As you might expect, this is not NASA’s best kept secret in space exploration. Sinclair & Rush was not to plant a flag on what is considered to be this solar system’s ninth and much debated ‘Dwarf Planet’ Pluto.

However, Sinclair & Rush and Office Electrics were planning something equally spectacular.

The combination of Office Electric’s cutting edge design in power management solutions together with Team Sinclair & Rush’s passion for Plastic solutions across all industries and applications created something no less meteoric – we did put the feet on Pluto.

In this instant, Pluto is one of the ultra-design based power management solutions offered by the innovative British team at Office Electric. For them ‘ordinary’ is not an option.

It’s just as well then that Sinclair & Rush’s sales engineers think beyond plastic caps, sleeves and plugs. Their solution-making skills are greater than simply (efficiently) protecting manufacturing components from contamination as WIP and preserving quality in transit.

To ‘Think Plastic’ is to take time to understand the application and use skill to deliver a silicone solution.

For Office Electric, Pluto is a unique desk or table ‘ondesk’ power and data point. To stop it drifting, it needed three silicone feet to slide into the recesses beneath the colourful designer domes.

Enter Ashley and S&R’s design team (stage right) and enter three Pluto Base Feet per unit (as drawn above).

In their own words: PLUTO satisfies a demand for power and data connectivity, in informal spaces, in a way that no other module has done before. Perfectly suited to breakout areas, smaller meeting rooms and coffee tables - PLUTO makes sharing power a pleasure - see www.office-electrics.com.

Flexibility is essential in the modern office. Work, reception and break-out dynamics are constantly changing and nothing can be achieved without supportive and safe power and data sourcing.

Flexibility is also the underlying message from Sinclair & Rush. Plastics manufacturing, moulding and finishing can be applied to almost any application across any industry. The extent of this flexibility is limited only by the ability of our engineers to think outside the box and by our clients’ (your) willingness to ask.

Our global plastics engineering experience and ability to push those boundaries, delivers cost effective solutions across the board.

Office Electrics put dynamics on the desk – because they ask.

Why not ask us yourselves:

Think Plastic ~ we do.
Put us to the test.

Thinking plastic – with a sting in the tail.

One of the incredible things about plastic is that there are practically no limits to its application. Thanks to Vespula vulgaris, today’s tale from Sinclair & Rush has a sting in it.

Vespula vulgaris – the common wasp and Vespula germanica – the German wasp are the two noisy blighters that plague our summer picnics and disturb an al fresco beer. Some leap about, hands waving in the air screaming in fear and succeeding only in antagonising the yellow and black striped peril. Others quietly lure the critters into improvised wasp traps of upturned beer baited empties and ashtrays.

But for Groveline Products Limited, the solution is defined and permanent.

Their product – Wasp Go Go does exactly what it says on the appropriately yellow and black striped box. The powder kills the wasps and the delivery apparatus carries it safely to penetrate the nest, delivering the solution directly to the source.

Sinclair & Rush contribute in two ways. We supply the plugs to protect the extension pipes so that, once removed, the pipes fit together precisely to deliver the powder right onto the nest. For obvious reasons, the further away the operator is able to stand, the less furrowed might be his / her brow at the time of application.

Also, because of our ability to mix, dip mould and deliver a vast range of shapes, sizes and colours, Groveline can colour code the caps on different powder capsules. Coloured sleeves also denote one type of pipe over another (above). The operator follows the colour code to fit the appropriate capsule to the correct extension pipe – you can see this in action in the clip below:

Our experience as manufacturers and suppliers of plastic caps, plugs, sleeves and all manner of masking products is vast and global. Tooling for an extensive range of dip moulded products is standard and held in stock. Custom dip moulding takes this further, enabling Sinclair & Rush to customise moulds to deliver bespoke solutions, whatever the problem.

If you are not sure what you need then please, just ask.

We have been at the forefront of research and development, evolving the plastics industry with expertise around the world. If we can’t create a solution, tested and costed to meet the brief – then, frankly, it’s unlikely that anyone can. Why not put us to the test.

Think Plastic ~ we certainly do.

We work with manufacturing companies in the UK & Europe, who have problems protecting or finishing their products. We manufacture and supply solutions for this through a wide variety of plastic mouldings, caps, plugs and sleeves, which means they... or indeed you.... reduce the risk of damage or contamination, so your customers receive a top quality product every time.

Thinking plastic all day can be quite exhausting

But thankfully for Quicksilver Exhaust Systems, that’s the company ethos taken to heart by Ashley Warner, Sales Executive at Sinclair & Rush UK & Europe.

Having browsed the S&R website, Chris Payne of Quicksilver reached for the phone and was put through to Ashley. Chris was after EPDM caps to protect protruding outlets on exhaust systems whilst in transit. But these aren’t just any old exhaust systems.

Quicksilver make special systems for very special cars. The caps were not only to protect the exhausts in transit to highly valued customers across the world, but they were to look the part too.

These are sports exhausts for machines such as the Maserati 4200 GT; Lamborghini Gallardo; Aston Martin DB7; Ferrari 308 GTSi; McLaren SLR. The exhaust systems are designed and built not just to function, but to look exceptional and sound awesome (view the clip below).

Ashley spent some time on the phone discussing the specific requirements and sent the requested EPDM cap samples for Quicksilver to try. But, to deliver the higher spec being discussed, Ashley recommended and sent PVC Vinyl caps to sample as a better looking and in fact more cost effective solution – something more befitting the application.

These (above) are just some of the Vinyl Dip Moulding caps available from the Sinclair & Rush.

Chris Payne liked the colour choices as well as the finish that the Vinyl caps offered. Impressed with the interest shown, service given and of course the end result, Chris said “…the caps have greatly improved the presentation of our high end product.”

One of the benefits of dip moulding is that the length of the cap can be changed without having to adjust the tooling, so the variety can be adjusted to suit different exhaust specifications. There is sufficient ‘stretch’ in the material to make sure that the fit is good and the caps remain robust and stylish throughout.

…and, one of the benefits of a Quicksilver Exhaust SystemIS THE NOISE:

[link to video clip of  Wilton House ‘Rev Off’]

Having a full understanding of the application intended for Sinclair & Rush caps, plugs and sheathes (even the quieter ones), is an important part of the relationship we try to build with clients. To know the end use, is to have confidence in the solutions we recommend.

Looking through our extensive range of off-the-shelf product, you may think A and D will do the job when in fact B might be less extensive; C might be deliverable in your corporate colours; and a customised E could be tailored to perfection.

For the A to Z of plastic moulded solutions to mask and protect components and WIP call Sinclair & Rush -

It started with a SC340 – and grew to be a KC 390

If it ends up on one of these…

Sinclair & Rush think plastic on behalf of the broadest imaginable range of industries:

HVAC, engineering, automotive, healthcare, telecoms, cable & wire, construction, marine, household appliances, hand tools, sport & leisure, aerospace – civil and military, and more.

Whatever your need for product protection, we’ve the plastics masking, plugging, sheathing, handling, gripping, shipping solution for you.

…If it ends up on one of those - it probably started with one of these:

Whilst waiting at lights on the Euston Road in London last week, my driving concentration lapsed and work mode took over – as it invariably does. I was surrounded by cars, truck and vans, approaching Euston station, with tube trains rolling beneath, a triple 7 bearing slowly down on Heathrow overhead and the University College Hospital across the way … just imagine the volume of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic components that made up the surrounding infrastructure.

But, and more importantly, just imagine the plastic dip moulded plugs, caps, masks and sheaths that are, were and will be part of the life process of each and every one of them…

…you see, we really do think plastic.

The SC 340 is a short cap used for all manner of protective application to prevent invasive liquids or materials contaminating tubes and tubular components. The KC-390 is a medium-size, twin-engine jet-powered military transport aircraft under development in Brazil.

This is one of literally thousands of off-the-peg solutions available from Sinclair & Rush (the cap not the plane!).

Sinclair & Rush pride ourselves on anything-but-off-the-peg-custom-design also.

Our strength has always been the ability to produce customised product protection solutions for customers. Our experienced engineers create a product designed specifically for customer needs, using cutting edge software and machinery to protect valuable components for OEM end use. Our skills are even called upon as part of prototype design and modelling to ensure that masking and plugging supports engineering efficiency throughout component life.

It may just be a plastic wiring sheath to some people, but to Sinclair & Rush it’s the wiring sheath for a part of a component that becomes part of yet another unit that may, in turn, contribute to the hydraulics of the tooling element of a manufacturing process – whatever it is, we are always proud to have done our bit.

Think Plastic ~ we’re proud to.

Grips – a global handle for Sinclair & Rush

As well as the existing practical and creative range of GripWorks hand grip designs from Sinclair & Rush – off the shelf, custom and branded – we are pleased to announce a massive new addition to the family.

Following the acquisition of Hunt-Wilde by our American parent company, we now extend our grip manufacturing solutions to include all of the pioneering tooling and design innovations developed by HW since 1946.

That’s when they started manufacturing injection moulded parts, primarily for cycle handlebar grips. As US bicycle manufacturing moved offshore, Hunt-Wilde grew the capacity for further diversification into other markets – lawn & garden; sports & leisure; industrial tooling; medical and general engineering.

To keep up with opportunity and development, HW created the facilities and technology to service ‘mass customisation’. Now, this tooling, methodology and product range sit alongside the technologies and skills of Sinclair & Rush’s own 60 years of experience.

The injection moulded grips from Hunt-Wilde form the perfect complement to our extensive line of dip moulded and foam hand grips.

Let’s introduce you too our new range, well, part of the range of injection moulded grips:

Please meet, from left to right, the Straight Grip; followed by the Classic Finger Grip; then the Rib-Finned Grip; next we have the Honeycomb Grip; and finally the Flanged Tapered Grip.

Then, when you add colours to the basic black, standard colours being red, blue, white, green. Yellow and gray, you can choose from an extensive range that includes these – but this is just a selection:
…and:
Each grip has a practical as well as aesthetic and ergonomic quality to add value to any OEM application. And those applications are about as varied as the range.

Such is the breadth of tooling and manufacturing process available to us, all accompanied by an extensive depth of experience and skill, that believe us when we say that if it is not here, we’ll create it just for you. Sinclair & Rush pride ourselves on providing custom moulding solutions to satisfy any manufacturing / product need.

We hope then that you’ll agree when we boast that, with the acquisition of the Hunt-Wilde grip line, GripWorks can provide virtually any grip solution available in the market.
